About the University
The Eastern University, Sri Lanka, established in 1986 and preceded by Batticaloa University College (1981), is located in Vantharumoolai, Eastern Province, with around 10,000 students. It has campuses in Trincomalee and Kallady, offering facilities like libraries, Centre for Information and Communication Technology, and sports facilities. Batticaloa, known as the “Land of the Singing Fish” for the musical sounds in its lagoon, is a coastal city with three lagoons and 120 kilometers of sandy beaches, including the famous Passikudah and Kalkudah beaches, ideal for safe swimming. The Faculty of Agriculture, one of the two founding faculties, strives to improve the quality of life for the farming community and promote sustainable agriculture. It will host the ISA 2025 symposium themed “Innovative Approaches to Modernize Agriculture for Food Security.”
About the Symposium
Food security and the provision of safe, nutritious food are critical global challenges, with food demand projected to increase by over 60% by 2050. However, limited land and water resources, coupled with climate change, are expected to reduce global food production by 2% each decade. To address this, the adoption of innovative technologies, integrated with indigenous knowledge, is essential for producing more food with fewer resources while protecting the environment. In response, the Faculty of Agriculture, Eastern University, Sri Lanka, will host the 4th International Symposium on Agriculture (ISA 2025) on 6th March 2025, themed “Innovative Approaches to Modernize Agriculture for Food Security.” The symposium invites researchers, policymakers, engineers, economists, young scientists, students, and other stakeholders to exchange ideas, share research, and discuss solutions for sustainable agriculture.
